Simple Home Remedies to Treat Gum Infection Naturally

Gum infection, also called gingivitis is a very common condition where the gums become swollen, sore or infected. The source of the infection is bacteria in plaque and calculus that remain on the teeth and infect the gums. The infection may occur after food gets trapped between the gum and tooth. Other factors that may also contribute to gingivitis include diabetes, overlapping teeths, genetic predisposition, inadequate oral hygiene, use of certain medication etc. If gingivitis is not cured, a condition called periodontitis can develop which affects the tissues that support teeth and causes gums to shrink.


Listed below are some effective home remedies that can be used to relieve symptoms and treat gum disease.

1. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a common medicinal herb with great healing properties. Antimicrobial effect of aloe vera kills the bacteria that cause gum disease. Simply massage the gums with fresh aloe vera gel and leave it on for 25-30 minutes and then rinse it off.


2. Salt water

Salt water rinses are an excellent short term treatment for the infection in gums. Warm saltwater rinse kills bacteria and draws infection out of any abscesses. Simply add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to a glass of lukewarm water and rinse your mouth using this homemade saline solution twice a day until the infection is gone.

3. Raw honey

Honey has natural antibacterial and antiseptic properties that helps in treating gingivitis and periodontal disease, which can affect teeth, gums, roots and ligaments. After brushing teeth, apply small amount of honey, preferably manuka honey on the gums for about 10 minutes, rinse with water.

4. Clove

Clove can be used to treat gingivitis due to its strong antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is a great source of vitamin C which helps in resisting infections. Simply chew 2 or 3 cloves, 3 times daily to treat gingivitis. You can also rub clove oil on gums, leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse it off with warm water.

5. Turmeric

Turmeric contains compound called curcumin, which has antioxidant, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Curcumin can effectively reduce plaque, swelling and infection in the gums. Prepare a thick smooth paste by mixing one teaspoon of turmeric powder with honey. Apply this paste gently all over the gums and teeth. Leave for few minutes and then rinse with water. Follow this treatment once daily for a few weeks.

6. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic remedy for oral health. Oil pulling can help reduce bacteria that cause gingivitis and strengthen the gums. The way oil pulling works is simple. It basically involves swishing a tablespoon of cold-pressed oil around in your mouth for 15-20 minutes.
Put about a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth. Swish it in your mouth and through your teeth for 15 to 20 minutes. Spit out the oil, then brush your teeth as normal.
